CARNIVAL OF VIAREGGIO

The carnival of Viareggio, along with that of the Sicilian Acireale and the Veneto Venice is without doubt the most beautiful and lively performance that demonstrates the capabilities of the Italian artistic and organizational.
Thanks to the efforts of a large part of the citizenship of Viareggio and the masters: artists and painters masks, wagons, movements all wonder and surprise.
February is really a magic month, made of costume parties and dances, all local parties with music stages and food stalls, which together with the masked on the seafront, turn the discontent in fun.
The main Rioni carnival are: Marco Polo, Docks, Torre del Lago and the Green Cross.

Historically it dates back to 1873 for the first parade of floats in Viareggio, while the local parties were the oldest. Some rich merchants decided to masquerade to protest high taxes they were forced to pay.
The big wagons stucco date from the end of the century, while paper mache lighter and more easily shaped took over after the suspension of six years due to World War I in 1921, was perfected around 30 years.
