The history of Locri is closely linked to the history of two other centers arose in the surrounding area: Locri, polis of Magna Greece founded in the seventh century BC, and Gerace, a medieval city built in the ninth century.

After the Roman conquest of Locri Epizephiri and as a result both of the Saracen and Turkish raids that the scourge of malaria, the site was gradually abandoned and the inhabitants moved to the safer inland hills which arose Gerace.

In the nineteenth century, with the return of population to coastal areas and also thanks to the advent of the railway, he developed the village of Gerace Marina, a hamlet belonging to the municipality of Gerace. Gerace Marina increasingly gained in importance with the transfer, from Gerace, some important administrative and commercial structures, including the Court and the People's Bank in 1880 to become an independent municipality in 1905. To give further impetus were the birth and development of important commercial and industrial activities: for example, the Officine Meccaniche Calabresi (WTO), in the early thirties, employed about 150 workers. In 1934 the municipality of Gerace Marina assumed its present name of Locri.
